Extension of Long Term Visa

A long-term visa is categorized as one that permits the visa holder to stay in India for more than 180 days (six months). The main visas that provide this are the Employment, Entry and Student visas.Extensions to visas are also reviewed on an individual case basis. Applications must be submitted well in advance of current visa expiry, and various documents are required for each specific visa.

A long-term visa requires registration in the area of residence at the District Superintendents of Police, which operates as the Foreign Registration Office (FRO) within 14 days of arriving in India. A “certificate of registration” will be issued once the procedure is complete, which can then be used to obtain a Residence Permit. A Residence Permit is a requirement for foreigners who want to work in India. At the Registration Office a completed registration form needs to be signed in the presence of the registration officer with the following documents:

  • Four passport photos
  • Passport with valid visa
  • Three photocopies of the photo page and the valid visa of passport
  • Details and three copies of proof of residence (rent agreement/utility bill with letter from landlord)
  • Registration fee of Rs.100

Employment, Business and Students visas require extra documentation.
